Florida Atlantic Owls have hired Tom Herman as their next head coach. He replaces Willie Taggart, who was fired last weekend.

Taggart was the Owls head coach for three seasons. He went 15-18 before his departure.

Herman is taking over a program that went 5-7 under Taggart in 2022. The Owls lost their last two games, which kept them from Bowl eligibility.

Four of their wins this season came at home. However, on the road, the team struggled as they went 1-5.

Athletic Director Brian White hopes that Herman can spark the team and have success. Before Taggart, Lane Kiffin went 26-13 at FAU.

Kiffin had two seasons, where the team won 10 or more games. In 2017, he guided the program to an 11-3 record.

After a 5-7 mark in 2018, the team rebounded with a 10-3 record in 2019 before Kiffin left for Ole Miss.

Herman returns to coaching with this move. This is his third head coaching opportunity.

He previously served two seasons as the Houston Cougars head coach. He then served four seasons as the Texas Longhorns head coach.

In total, he is 54-22 as a head coach. He went 32-18 with the Longhorns. And he went 22-4 with the Cougars.

He was out of coaching this past season. His last coaching role came in 2021 as an offensive analyst with the Chicago Bears.

Herman also coached at Ohio State, Iowa State, Rice, Texas State, and Sam Houston State.
