The San Francisco 49ers have finally admitted that they were wrong about Trey Lance. The team traded Lance on Friday.
Lance had been traded to the Dallas Cowboys. In exchange, the 49ers received a 2024 fourth-round draft pick.

The 49ers missed on Lance, the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. But at the same time, it puts even more pressure on the team to ensure that they got the Brock Purdy pick right.

Purdy, a former seventh-round draft pick, rose to stardom last season when he was the 49ers’ third-string quarterback. When Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo went down with injuries, Purdy got the starting job.
And he never looked back as he guided the team to the NFC Championship Game. Unfortunately for the 49ers, Purdy went down with an injury and they eventually lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Purdy is expected to be the team’s starting quarterback. Sam Darnold will back him up.
Lance, who was the 49ers’ third-string quarterback at the time of the trade, barely played at North Dakota State. He is the second former NDSU quarterback, who went in the top five picks in the NFL Draft, to fizzle out.
Carson Wentz, the former No. 2 overall pick by the Philadelphia Eagles, is without a job. And may not get another chance after struggling with the Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and the Washington Commanders in consecutive seasons.

Last season, Lance played in just two games before suffering a season-ending injury. He was 1-1 as a starter in those games.
He went 15 of 32 for 194 yards. He also had one interception.
In his two-year career, he has appeared in eight games. He has made four starts. He is 2-2 in those games.
With the 49ers, he went 56 of 102 for 797 yards. He had five touchdown passes and three interceptions.
Following the trade, he will now backup Dak Prescott with the Cowboys. This puts Prescott’s future into question.
If Lance outplays Prescott then he will take over the starting job. We will have to wait and see if that happens.
Prescott took the starting job previously from Tony Romo. And he has had the role for the past several seasons.
Prescott is entering the final year of his contract.
