Rutgers wins second Pinstripe Bowl, defeats Miami (Florida)

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights picked up their sixth Bowl win in program history. The Scarlet Knights won 31-24 over the Miami (Florida) Hurricanes in the Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl on Thursday afternoon at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York.

The Scarlet Knights have won seven Bowl games. And Head Coach Greg Schiano, who returned to the program for the 2020 season for his second stint, is 6-2 in Bowl games.

Schiano lost his first Bowl game with the Scarlet Knights in 2005 in the Insight Bowl against the Arizona State Sun Devils. He then won five straight from 2006 through 2011.

Rutgers is 2-1 in the Pinstripe Bowl. Both wins came under Schiano, as they also won 27-13 over the Iowa State Cyclones in 2011.

This was the first time that the Scarlet Knights and the Hurricanes met in a Bowl game.

The Hurricanes have fallen to 19-24 in Bowl games. The program has now dropped five straight Bowl games.

Their last Bowl win came in the Russell Athletic Bowl on December 28th, 2016. They defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers in Orlando, Florida.

This was Rutgers first winning season since 2014.

Scarlet Knights quarterback Gavin Wimsatt went 7 of 15 for 84 yards.

Kyle Monangai led the backs with 25 carries for 163 yards and a touchdown. Christian Dremel led the receivers with one reception for 23 yards.

Hurricanes quarterback Jacurri Brown went 20 of 31 for 181 yards. He had one touchdown pass and one interception.

Brown also led the backs 15 carries for 57 yards and two touchdowns. Xavier Restrepo had 11 receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown.

Rutgers outscored Miami (Florida) 17-14 in the second half. Timmy Ward recovered a block punt in the end zone for a touchdown.

Wimsatt scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown. Jai Patel scored on a 35 yard field goal.

Hurricanes’ Brown hit Restrepo for a 30 yard touchdown reception. Brown also scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown.

The Scarlet Knights also led 14-10 at halftime. Wimsatt scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown. Monangai scored on a seven-yard rushing touchdown.

Brown also scored on a seven-yard rushing touchdown for the Hurricanes. Andres Borregales made a 35 yard field goal.
