The New England Patriots have used the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on former North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye. This was the third straight quarterback to go off the board to begin the draft.
The Chicago Bears used the No. 1 overall pick to draft former USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams. Then, the Washington Commanders used the 2nd overall pick on former LSU Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Like those other picks, Maye is projected to be the Patriots starting quarterback. However, with this being a new administration with Jerod Mayo being in his first year as a head coach, the Patriots elect to use Jacoby Brissett as a gap quarterback.

Brissett signed with the Patriots as a free agent. He served as the Commanders’s backup in 2023.
The Patriots went 4-13 during the 2023 season. This was the final season with legendary coach Bill Belichick in charge.
Mac Jones struggled under offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien. Jones, who was previously a first-round draft pick, went 2-9 in 11 starts.
He went 224 of 345 for 2,120 yards. Jones had 10 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions.
In the off-season, Jones was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Bailey Zappe served as a backup. He went 2-4 in six starts. He went 127 of 212 for 1,272 yards. Zappe had six touchdown passes and nine interceptions.

Maye was a two-year starter for the North Carolina Tar Heels. This past season, Maye went 269 for 425 for 3,608 yards. He had 24 passing touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Maye will work with new Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, who came to the team from the Cleveland Browns. Quarterback coach T.C. McCartney will also work with Maye.
Like Van Pelt, McCartney also came from the Browns. He was the Browns tight ends coach in 2023. McCartney has not been a quarterbacks coach since 2019 with the Denver Broncos.
