Connecticut Huskies Men’s Basketball head coach Dan Hurley will remain at the school. He has spurred the Los Angeles Lakers interest.
Hurley met with the Lakers brass on Friday. Then he and his family considered the possibility of joining the Lakers.
He ultimately turned down a six-year, $70 million deal. The contract had an average salary of $11.6 million per season..
With Hurley remaining in college basketball, the Lakers have to turn their focus to their other candidates. Before Hurley’s name was mentioned last week, there was a report that said that former NBA player J.J. Redick was the front runner for the job.
However, according to our sources, Redick has not formally interviewed for the job. Our sources have also indicated that the Lakers would like to interview New Orleans Pelicans assistant coach James Borrego.
Borrego was previously the Charlotte Hornets head coach for four seasons. He also served a short stint as the Orlando Magic interim head coach.
He is 148-183 as a head coach. Borrego did not make the playoffs in any season as a head coach.
In the past six seasons with the Huskies, Hurley has gone 141-58. However, in the past two seasons, he has guided the team to a 68-11 record.
Each of the past two seasons have ended with Hurley and his team celebrating as the Men’s Basketball Tournament National Champions.
