The North Carolina Tar Heels have one of the biggest openings so far in this head football coaching cycle. One prominent NFL head coach has reportedly interviewed for the position.
Just days after Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith — a Tar Heels alum — Inside Carolina has confirmed that Bill Belichick has interviewed for the position. Whoever is taking over the job is replacing legendary college football coach Mack Brown.
He was fired by North Carolina before the season finale. But remained in place for the North Carolina State Wolfpack game, which the Tar Heels lost 35-30 at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Former NFL head coach Freddie Kitchens is serving as interim head coach until a new coach could take over.
Whoever is taking over the program would take over a 6-6 team. The Tar Heels are in the mix for a Bowl game.
According to reporters Pat Forde and Albert Breer, Belichick wants to coach in 2025. And they’re reporting that he has strong interest in college football.
What does that mean for the NFL soon-to-be openings? We’re not sure.
Belichick became a legendary figure as the New England Patriots head coach from 2000 through 2023. With Tom Brady, the duo guided the team to six Super Bowl Championships.
He also served as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 1991 through 1995.
Belichick is 72 years old and was a three-time Associated Press Coach of the Year.
The longtime coach has never worked in college football. Yet, he may see this as his best chance to find employment for the 2025 season.
He was passed over during the 2024 NFL head coaching cycle despite getting numerous interviews.
Besides the Patriots and Browns, he also worked for the New York Jets, New York Giants, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions after beginning his coaching career with the Baltimore Colts.
