The Northern Illinois Huskies won over the Fresno State Bulldogs on Monday afternoon. The Huskies won 28-20 over the Bulldogs in double overtime in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl at Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho.
With the win, the Huskies improved to 8-5. The Bulldogs fell to 6-7 with the loss.
This was Bulldogs interim head coach Tim Skipper’s final game leading the team. He was passed over for the job as Fresno State hired Matt Entz to lead the team moving forward.
Northern Illinois is now 2-0 in this particular Bowl game. They also won 40-17 on December 18th, 2010 in the then-Humanitarian Bowl game.
This was the final Humanitarian Bowl game. Ever since the game has been known as the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl game.
The Bulldogs fell to 2-2 in this Bowl game. Their Bowl wins came in December 2004 and December 2007.
In the second overtime, the game came down to one final play. It was a 4th and 9 play.
As Bulldogs quarterback Joshua Wood dropped back to pass, he was sacked by Bulldogs defensive player Jordan Hansen. That ended the game.
Huskies quarterback Josh Holst went 19 of 31 for 207 yards. He had three touchdown passes and one interception.
Holst also had 16 carries for 65 yards. Grayson Barnes had six receptions for 57 yards and two touchdowns.
Bulldogs quarterback Wood went 16 of 23 for 180 yards. He had one touchdown pass.
Bryson Donelson had 15 carries for 82 yards and one touchdown. Mac Danela had six receptions for 118 yards.
The Huskies outscored the Bulldogs 25-7 in the second half and overtime. George Dimopoulos hit Dane Pardridge for a 25-yard touchdown reception.
Then, Dimopoulos hit Holst for the two-point conversion.
In the first overtime, Holst hit Barnes for a three-yard touchdown reception.
In the third quarter, Holst hit Barnes for a 26-yard touchdown reception. Kanon Woodill made a 34-yard field goal.
The Bulldogs’ lone points in the second half and overtime came in the first overtime. Wood hit Donelson for a nine-yard touchdown reception.
Fresno State led 13-3 in the first half. Donelson scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown.
Wood also scored on a 13-yard rushing touchdown.
The Huskies line first-half points came when Woodill made a 29-yard field goal in the first quarter.
