The Detroit Red Wings have fired head coach Derek Lalonde. The team also fired assistant coach Bob Boughner.
Instead of naming an interim head coach, the team has hired Todd McLellan as their head coach. He was previously an assistant coach with the team for three seasons from 2005 through 2008.
Detroit has also hired former head coach Trent Yawney as an assistant coach.
McLellan and Yawney’s first game with the Red Wings comes on Friday night. The Red Wings host the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7 pm at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
The new coaches are taking over a Red Wings squad that has gone 13-17-4 this season. The team has 30 points, which is the second-fewest in the Eastern Conference.
According to WXYZ-TV, the Red Wings faithful were chanting “Fire Derek” during the team’s game on Monday night. The St. Louis Blues won 4-0 in the game.
The 57-year-old McLellan has previously been a head coach with the San Jose Sharks, the Edmonton Oilers, and the Los Angeles Kings. As an NHL head coach, McLellan has gone 598-412-134 in 1,144 games.
He spent seven seasons leading the Sharks. During his tenure there, he went 311-163-66.
McLellan led the Kings for parts of five seasons. He sent 164-130-44 before being dismissed in February.
He also led the Oilers for four seasons, where he went 123-119-24.
Yawney — who also has head coaching experience in the American Hockey League — spent parts of two seasons as the Chicago Blackhawks head coach. He went 33-55-15 during parts of the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
