The UCONN Huskies won their first Bowl game in nearly 15 years. They defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels 27-14 on Saturday afternoon in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
This was the third edition of the Bowl game at the historic ballpark. The Huskies joined the Boston College Eagles and the Louisville Cardinals won the previous two games.
The Huskies are the first Independent team to win this Bowl game. The Atlantic Coast Conference won the previous two games.
UCONN won their first Bowl game since a 20-7 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks in the 2010 PapaJohns.com Bowl on January 2nd, 2010. The game took place at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
They had lost their last 3 Bowl games.
North Carolina — who was led by interim head coach Freddie Kitchens — has dropped their last four Bowl games since January 2021. Their last win came on a 55-13 win over the Temple Owls in the Military Bowl on December 27, 2019, at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.
Huskies quarterback Joe Fagnano went 16 of 23 for 151 yards. He had two touchdown passes.
Mel Brown had 11 carries for 96 yards. Skyler Bell had three receptions for 77 yards and one touchdown.
Tar Heels quarterback Michael Merdinger went 9 of 12 for 86 yards. Merdinger came into the contest after starter Jacolby Criswell went down with an injury and did not return to the game.
Caleb Hood had 11 carries for 78 yards. John Copenhaver had four receptions for 44 yards and one touchdown.
The Tar Heels outscored the Huskies 7-3 in the second half. Hood hit Copenhaver for a 17-yard touchdown reception.
Huskies kicker Chris Freeman made a 24-yard field goal.
The Huskies led 24-7 in the first half. Fagnano hit Bell for a 38-yard touchdown reception.
Fagnano hit Alex Honig for four-yard touchdown reception. Cam Edwards also scored on a two-yard rushing touchdown.
Freeman also made a 32-yard field goal.
The Tar Heels lone first half points came in a kickoff return. Chris Culiver returned a kickoff for a 95-yard touchdown.
