The New Orleans Saints were believed to be the favorite to land former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy at one point this coaching cycle. However, as of Tuesday night, he will not be returning to the Crescent City.

McCarthy is expected to sit out this coaching cycle. He will be one of the big names for the 2026 coaching cycle.

Whoever is hired by the Saints brass, they’re going to take over a tough job. The team went 5-12 this past season with Dennis Allen and Darren Rizzi.

The team also has a bunch of bad contracts that will hamper them moving forward. The Saints have not made the playoffs in four years since the 2020 NFL season.

According to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark, the Saints interviewed Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore on Monday night. This was Moore’s second interview with the Saints.

The 36-year-old former NFL quarterback has not been an NFL head coach yet in his career. Two years ago, the Eagles faced the Kansas City Chiefs and Jonathan Gannon had an interview with the Arizona Cardinals before their Arizona Super Bowl.

The following day, he stayed in Arizona and was hired by the Cardinals. Will the same scenario play out next week with Moore? We don’t know yet.

McCarthy spent the last five seasons as the Dallas Cowboys head coach. This month; however, the sides could not reach an agreement on a new deal.

Thus, McCarthy was made available for interviews with other coaching jobs. As the Cowboys head coach, he went 49-35 with three straight winning seasons from 2021 through 2023.

As an NFL head coach, McCarthy has gone 174-112-2 with the Cowboys and the Packers. He also guided the Packers to a Super Bowl win during the 2010 season.

McCarthy also spent five seasons as an offensive coordinator with the Saints from 2000 through 2004. Then, he spent one season as the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator in 2005.

He has been a coach at the NFL and college football levels since 1987.
