The Stanford Cardinal has hired Frank Reich to lead their football program on an interim basis. This will be a one year deal.
While Reich will be the interim coach, the team will also begin a national search to find their next leader. Troy Taylor was fired last week by the Cardinal’s GM Andrew Luck.

When Luck fired Taylor, he became the first college GM to fire a head coach. Traditionally, an Athletic Director would make the move.
Reich, who was once known as a quarterback guru, has not had a job since he was fired by the Carolina Panthers. He had a short-lived tenure with the Panthers in 2023, as he did not complete the season as head coach.
This will be Reich’a first college coaching job. Reich is taking over a program that went 3-9 in 2023 and 2024.
It’ll be interesting to see how his coaching style translates to the college football game. He is the second former NFL head coach — who had no previous college coaching experience — as Bill Belichick became the North Carolina Tar Heels as their football head coach in December.
Reich is 41-43-1 as an NFL head coach in the regular season. He is also 1-2 in postseason play.
Outside of coaching the Panthers as their head coach, he also was the Indianapolis Colts head coach from 2018 through 2022.
Before joining the Colts, he spent two seasons as the Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator in 2016 and 2017. He also spent two seasons as the San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator in 2014 and 2015.
Reich worked for the Colts from 2006 through 2011 in a variety of roles. He also was the wide receivers coach for the Arizona Cardinals in 2012.
He also was the Chargers quarterbacks coach in 2013.
