2025 draft prospect Bru McCoy steps away as a football player

Former Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Bru McCoy has medically retired. His football dreams as a player are over.

McCoy was not drafted in April’s NFL Draft. He may pursue a career as a coach to stay close to the game.

“My understanding is it was made known during that draft not to select him – and now we know the reason why,” NFL insider Jordan Schultz said on Instagram. “McCoy was high school teammates with Bryce Young at Mater Dei, where he was the U.S. Army Player of the Year.”

While he did play this past season, it’s not clear if he had any setback in his recovery. Or does not want to get injured again.

“This has been one of the toughest decisions of my life, but after careful consideration with my doctors, family, and people closest to me, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s the right path for my long-term health and well-being,” said McCoy on his post.

McCoy played the last three seasons with the Volunteers. He began his collegiate career with the USC Trojans in 2020.

In 2023, McCoy suffered a fracture dislocation to his right ankle against the South Carolina Gamecocks. He did not play again that season following the September 30th, 2023 injury.

Following his recovery, McCoy returned to the team in 2024. While he did see action in several contests, he did not have good performances in many contests.

He had 89 yards in their season-opener against Chattanooga. McCoy then had a season-high 92 receptions in a win over Oklahoma.

McCoy also had 80 receiving yards in a win over Alabama. Those were his best performances of the season.

The wide receiver had 39 receptions for 472 yards and two touchdowns in 2024. In his four collegiate years, he had 129 receptions for 1,592 yards in 35 games, He also had nine touchdown receptions.
