Sports Science host John Brenkus has passed away. He may have been 54, according to ESPN.
An official cause of death has not been determined yet. However, a post on his social media account said that he battled depression before his death.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus has passed away,” his social media account said. “John, co-founder of Base Productions, founder of Brinx.tv, and co-creator and host of the six-time Emmy Award-winning ‘Sports Science,’ had been battling depression. John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31st, 2025.

“His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time, and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help.”
Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest. At press time, the statement did not say that he took his own life.
However, when a person loses their battle with depression, it typically means death in a tragic way, such as suicide.
According to his website, he has done more than 1,500 segments of Sports Science. He also worked with 1,800 athletes for the segments. He sold Sports Science to ESPN.
He was previously featured on ESPN, ABC, CNBC, Fox Sports, Sports Illustrated, Forbes, Wired, and GQ. He spoke on the TED stage as well as with Fortune 500 companies.

Brenkus also wrote several books.
“Prayers up for John Brenkus and his family,” Robert Griffin III said on X. “The man who gave us the Emmy-winning Sports Science lost his battle with depression at the age of 53.”
