The New York Knicks advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 25 years. However, that was not good enough for head coach Tom Thibodeaux to keep his job.

He was fired by the Knicks management on Tuesday. This comes just days after the Knicks lost 4-2 in the Eastern Conference Finals.

“Our organization is singularly focused on winning a championship for our fans,” Knicks President Leon Rose said in a statement. “This pursuit led us to the difficult decision to inform Tom Thibodeau that we’ve decided to move in another direction. We can’t thank Tom enough for pouring his heart and soul into each and every day of being the New York Knicks head coach.”

Thibodeux had been the Knicks head coach for five years before this departure. According to betting sites, Michael Malone is the favorite to be the Knicks next head coach.

Malone is currently available as he was fired by the Denver Nuggets in April right before the end of the regular season. Since being fired by the Nuggets, Malone has done work with ABC/ESPN during the playoffs.

The 67-year-old Thibodeaux has not won an NBA championship as a head coach in his head coaching career with the Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves, and the Knicks. He did; however, win an NBA championship in 2008 as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics.

Malone, 53, has won an NBA championship on his resume. He guided the Nuggets to the NBA Championship in 2023.

This was the Nuggets first NBA championship in team history.

The Knicks fans want a championship. However, the team has not won an NBA championship since 1973.
