Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback C.J. Stroud was the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy before the season began. However, as the season continued to play out, a new favorite has taken over.

Tennessee Volunteers senior quarterback Hendon Hooker is the odds-on favorite at this time. The 24-year-old has come out of nowhere to be the favorite in this race.

According to BetMGM, Hooker is a +100 as the Heisman favorite. Stroud has fallen to second with a +175.

Hooker’s stellar season is similar to another former Southeastern Conference quarterback, who came out of nowhere to lead the race this late in the season. Joe Burrow’s stellar play guided the LSU Tigers to an undefeated season in 2019 that allowed him to win the prestigious Heisman Trophy.

Hooker has a massive game this Saturday that could help him with a Heisman moment. It was in November 2019 when Burrow secured the Heisman with a win over the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The Volunteers are on the road against the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. The game will be televised nationally on CBS at 3:30 pm EST.

The North Carolina native will be one of the older Heisman winners if he wins. If he were to win in New York City on December 10th, he would be the second-oldest player to win the award in its nearly 90-year history.

Chris Weinke is the oldest player to win the award in 2000, as the Florida State Seminoles quarterback was 28 years old, 131 days old after winning the award. Former Oklahoma Sooners running back Billy Sims is currently the second-oldest player to win the award as he was 23 years old and 78 days when he won in 1978.

Coming into the colossal match-up with the Georgia Bulldogs, Hooker has gone 156 of 219 for 2,338 passing yards. He has had 21 touchdown passes and one interception.

According to ESPN, Hooker has had 1,543 passing yards with 14 touchdowns against Associated Press Top 25 teams. His best performance of the season thus far came in a Week 7 win over the Alabama Crimson Tide when he guided the team with 385 yards with five touchdowns in a Top 6 matchup.

He can have his Heisman moment with a marquee performance against the Bulldogs on national television. If he wins come December 10th, he will be the first Volunteers player to win the prestigious award.
