The Cleveland Browns have hired Jim Schwartz as their new defensive coordinator. He comes to the team from the Tennessee Titans.
Schwartz has worked as the Titans’ Senior defensive assistant for the last two seasons. Now, he gets to coordinate a defense once again.
The 56-year-old returns to the Browns organization with this move. He previously worked as a personnel scout with the team from 1993 through 1995.
He replaces Joe Woods, who was fired by the team at the end of the season. Woods was the team’s defensive coordinator for three seasons.
Schwartz was one of four candidates, who met with the team about the defensive coordinator job. The three other candidates were reportedly Pittsburgh Steelers inside linebackers coach Brian Flores, New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo, and Seattle Seahawks associate head coach Sean Desai.
The veteran defensive mind will now attempt to fix the defense that gave up 135 rushing yards per game.
The Browns had the 20th-best defense in the league. They gave up 22.4 points per game and 381 points overall.
The team had five games, where they allowed 30 or more points per game. They allowed a season-high 39 points in a loss to the Miami Dolphins on November 13th.
The defense also allowed 31 points, 30 points, and 38 points in the first half of the season. Then, in the second half, they gave up 39 points and 31 points in back-to-back losses to begin the second half.
Schwartz previously worked with Browns general manager Andrew Berry in Philadelphia. Berry and Schwartz were both a part of the Philadelphia Eagles team during the 2019 season.
Before being hired by the Titans in 2021, he served as defensive coordinator with the Titans, Buffalo Bills, and the Eagles. He also served as the Detroit Lions’ head coach from 2009 through 2013.
