They needed to win. Then, they needed help from D.C. United, and C.F. Montreal to lose to give the Union the boost that they needed to make it to the extra season.

C.F. Montreal defeated the NYCFC 2-0. And Charlotte FC defeated the D.C. United 3-0.

However, the loss caused the Union to end their season in a tie with Toronto FC. Both teams finished with 37 points. Yet, Toronto FC finished above them in the standings.

The 37 points were their lowest in a season since 2015 when they also finished the season with 37 points. The 2015 season was Jim Curtin’s first full season at the helm of the Union.

FC Cincinnati swept the Union in both games this season. Despite the win, the Union still leads the all-time series 6-3-5.

The Union has scored 20 goals in the series. And FC Cincinnati has scored 15 goals.

Jakob Glesnes was playing the ball from an FC Cincinnati player. He then accidentally kicked the ball in the direction and past Union keeper Andre Blake into the goal.

The goal came at 45:46 — right at the beginning of the second half — gave FC Cincinnati the 2-1 lead. Glesnes appeared to be shocked that the ball went in the net.

This was Glesnes’ second own goal of the season. And it came at the worst time.

He also scored an own goal in the CONCACAF match against Saprissa.

As a result of Glesnes’ own goal, the Union needed to score two goals in the second half. However, with his goal, there was no drive in the team to score the two goals needed without their best player, Daniel Gazdag, who went out in the 15th minute.

Right before the end of the first half, FC Cincinnati scored when Yamil Asad scored to make it 1-1. Asad’s goal came at 45+4.

Quinn Sullivan gave the Union the start that they needed. He scored his goal in the second minute.
