According to ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Carania, New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray is believed to have a fractured hand. He was injured in his first game with the Pelicans.

Murray was acquired by the Pelicans in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks this past July. In his first game with his new team, he had 14 points, eight rebounds, and 10 assists against the Chicago Bulls.

Murray will undergo tests to confirm the injury. If he indeed has a fracture in his hand, he could be sidelined for at least the next month. Maybe even more time than that.

According to CBS Sports, Murray was probable for the game. He had been away from the team in recent days, as he dealt with a family emergency. They reported that he had returned on Tuesday and then went through a morning shootaround with his teammates.

He was acquired by the Pelicans on July 6th, 2024. In a package that went back to the Atlanta Hawks, it included Dyson Daniels, E.J. Liddell, Larry Nance Jr., a sign-and-trade with Cody Zeller, and two future first-round draft picks.

The 28-year-old Murray — who was a first-round draft pick by the San Antonio Spurs in 2016 — was the team’s starting point guard in their depth chart, according to ESPN. Now, Jose Alvarado is forced to be the team’s starter as Murray misses time.

The Pelicans should have more information on Murray’s injury on Thursday. If he is indeed sidelined, Alvarado will be the starting point guard for the first time this season on Friday against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Murray was the team’s third-leading scorer in their win over the Bulls with the aforementioned 14 points. Brandon Ingram led the team with 33 points. C.J. McCollum was the second-leading scorer with 23 points.

Now, with Murray out, Willie Green will have to rely heavily on Ingram and McCollum. And Zion Williamson when he returns to the lineup. He did not play against the Bulls in the season opener.
