Late interception seals Delaware’s 24-21 win over Rhode Island

Newark, DE — The Delaware Blue Hens defeated the No. 11 Rhode Island Rams on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Hens won 24-21 over the Rams at Delaware Stadium.

The Blue Hens improved to 8-1 on the season. The team remains perfect at home as they are 6-0 in front of their home fans.

The Rams fell to 8-2 overall. Their seven-game win streak was snapped with the loss.

Due to the Blue Hens pending move to the FBS level with Conference USA in 2025, the team is not eligible for an FCS ranking or a playoff berth. Their final home FCS game will be on Saturday, November 16th against the Campbell Camels.

Delaware is now 26-11 against Rhode Island and 15-4 against the Rams at Delaware Stadium.

The Rams were driving late in the game. However, it was stopped after Gavin Moul picked off Rams quarterback Hunter Helms.

Blue Hens quarterback Nick Minicucci went 25 of 34 for 187 yards. He had one touchdown pass.

Marcus Yarns had 23 carries for 174 yards and a touchdown. Phil Lutz had five receptions for 89 yards.

With his performance, Yarns surpassed 2,000 rushing yards at Delaware.

Helms went 15 of 23 for 181 yards. He had two touchdown passes and one interception.

Malik Grant had 12 carries for 64 yards. Marquis Buchanan had five receptions for 85 yards and one touchdown.

Both teams scored a touchdown in the second half. Blue Hens’ Minicucci hit Jake Thaw for a seven-yard touchdown reception.

Thaw made a nice catch. However, it went under review to ensure that it was a touchdown reception. After review, it was ruled a touchdown.

The Thaw touchdown came on a 4th and 3 play.

Helmet hit Greg Gaines for a 20-yard touchdown reception. When Gaines scored, it was the Rams’ first score since the first quarter.

The Blue Hens led 17-14 at halftime. Minicucci scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown.

It was his first rushing touchdown.

Yarns scored on a 27-yard rushing touchdown. Nate Reed made a 25-yard field goal.

Both of the Rams touchdowns have come off of Blue Hens’ fumbles. After the first fumble and several plays later, Helms hit Buchanan for a 22-yard touchdown reception.

Then, on the following possession, Delaware fumbled the ball once again. Devin Hightower picked up the football and scored on a 21-yard fumble return for a touchdown.
