Travis Hunter is the favorite to win the prestigious Heisman Trophy award. He was named a finalist on Monday night.
Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware announced the finalist on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. He joins a field that also includes Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, and Miami (Florida) quarterback Cam Ward.
The Colorado Buffaloes star two-way player will attempt to become the second two-way player to win the award on Saturday night in New York City.
The junior — who plays wide receiver and cornerback — may become the second winner from the school. Hunter — who followed Deion Sanders from Jackson State to Colorado two years ago — may join Rashaan Salaam as winners from the Boulder, Colorado-based school.
Salaam won the award in 1994. However, he will not see Hunter win it — if he does — as he passed away on December 5th, 2016.
Sanders said this past weekend during his press conference talking about the Bowl game that he expects Hunter to win the Heisman Trophy.
Hunter has had 92 receptions for 1,152 yards. He had had 14 touchdowns as a receiver.
He also had two carries for five yards and a touchdown as a running back.
As a lockdown cornerback, Hunter has had 32 tackles with one tackle for a loss. He also caused one forced fumble.
Hunter has had four interceptions and 11 pass deflections.
