The Philadelphia 76ers were supposed to contend for an NBA championship. That was the expectation for this season.

This season, as it has progressed, has been a bust. At press time, they have the 12th-best record in the Eastern Conference, as they are 23-44.

Now, they will play the rest of this season without star free agent signing Paul George, who has been shut down. The news broke before they played the Houston Rockets in Houston, Texas on Monday night.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, he has been receiving injections in his left adductor muscle and left knee. He also reported that George—who signed a multi-year deal with the 76ers in the off-season—had been consulting with doctors over the past week about the best steps moving forward.

“Following the procedure, George is medically unable to play and will be out for at least six weeks,” the 76ers statement said. “Further updates on his recovery will be provided as appropriate.”

He had been playing through groin, finger, and knee pain this season. ESPN reported that George received painkilling injections for a five-game stretch leading up to the NBA All-Star Game in February.

In July, he left the Los Angeles Clippers for a four-year, $212 million deal with the 76ers. This season, when George has played, he has averaged just 16.2 points per game in 41 games.

George also averaged 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists.

“I haven’t been the healthiest, so it’s just been putting a ton of work towards getting my body as healthy as possible, and to keep (the) focus of obviously being here and trying to turn things around here and the full focus is trying to get this team together,” George said of the decision to pause his podcast in January.

Right now, the 76ers only have one of their big three left on the roster. Tyrese Maxey will have to lead the troops.

Center Joel Embiid has been hampered by injuries throughout this career. He was ruled out for the rest of the season almost a month ago on February 28th.

Now, without George and Embiid, the 76ers are playing for a lottery pick.
