The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team was the last team selected in the NCAA March Madness Tournament. Yet, in the final game of the first four, they performed dominantly.

The Tar Heels defeated the San Diego State Aztecs 95-68 on Tuesday night at the University of Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio.

Maybe the Tar Heels wanted to show the world that they belonged in the tournament when there was some controversy on the team getting in over the West Virginia Mountaineers. Former Mountaineers head coach Darian DeVries — who became the Indiana Hoosiers head coach on Tuesday — was not happy that the selection committee chose the Tar Heels over his former employer.

Even West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey threatened a lawsuit against the NCAA for what he described as a ‘miscarriage of justice.’

While the Tar Heels won by 27 seconds, the Aztecs trailed by 32 points in the second half. With 10:45 left in the game, the Aztecs trailed 71-39 following a layup by Elliot Cadeau.

Fifth-year senior R.J. Davis led the Tar Heels with 26 points. He also had two assists.

Three of the Tar Heels starters scored in double digits. Ven-allen Lubin had 12 points and Jae’lyn Withers had 10 points.

North Carolina had 32 bench points. Seth Trimble led the bench with his 16 points.

Nick Boyd and Wayne McKinney III led the Aztecs with 12 points apiece. Boyd had his 12 points in 30 minutes, while McKinney had his 12 points in 19 minutes.

Boyd had five rebounds and two assists. McKinney III had one block and two steals.
