The Dallas Mavericks took so much heat after trading away Luka Dončić in February. Months later, the Mavericks received the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery.

The Mavericks are expected to use the top pick on Cooper Flagg, who is considered a generational talent. Flagg would be a projected starter right away.

Following the trade of Dončić, the Mavericks finished the season as a play-in team as the 10th seed in the Western Conference. They had a 1.8% chance to win the lottery before the proceedings took place.

This was similar to the NHL Draft, where the New York Islanders won the draft lottery with a 3.5% chance.

According to ESPN, the Mavericks had the third-best lowest odds to win the draft lottery. In 1993, the Orlando Magic had a 1.52% chance to win the draft lottery before drafting Chris Webber and trading him for Anfernee Hardaway.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Chicago Bulls had a 1.70% chance to win the draft lottery in 2014 and 2008. The Cavaliers used the 2014 top pick on Andrew Wiggins and the Bulls used the top pick in 2008 on Derrick Rose.

In 2011, the Cavaliers had a 2.80% chance to win the top pick. The Cavaliers used the top pick on Kyrie Irving.

Flagg averaged 19.2 points per game in 37 starts with the Duke Blue Devils. He played one season in college basketball before entering the NBA Draft.

He also averaged 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game.

The Mavericks projected lineup when healthy include Irving at point guard, Klay Thompson at shooting guard, Flagg at small forward, Anthony Davis at power forward, and Daniel Gafford at center.
