Lights Out? That might be the case for Shawne Merriman.
Merriman, who is known by his nickname “lights out”, was released by the Buffalo Bills this morning. He was moved from his normal outside linebacker position to defensive end due to the Bills switch from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3 defense during the off-season.
He was claimed off waivers by the Bills near the middle of the 2010 season after the San Diego Chargers decided to cut ties with him. Shortly into his first practice with the Bills in November 2010, he injured his Achilles tendon and was placed on season-ending injured reserve.

In January 2011, he signed a two-year extension with the Bills that was worth $10.5 million. He was guaranteed $5 million.
Last season, he made five starts with the team, before being injured again. In October 2011, he suffered a partially torn Achilles tendon and missed the rest of the season. In those 5 starts, he had nine tackles and a sack.
Merriman, who was the 12th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft by the Chargers, has played in the league since his rookie season that year. He spent six seasons with the Chargers and two seasons with the Bills.
In his career, he has appeared in 75 games, including 59 starts. He has had 258 tackles, including 55 tackles for a loss and 50 quarterback hits.
He also had 45.5 sacks. He was a dominant force in his first three seasons, where he combined for 39.5 sacks.

Following the 2007 season, he tallied just six sacks. He had 4.0 sacks in 2009. He then had a sack each in 2011 and 2012 with the Bills.
Merriman also had eight forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. He also had one interception and 20 pass deflections.
