Celtics expected to hire Udoka as head coach

The Boston Celtics are expected to hire Ime Udoka as their new head coach. He is currently an assistant with the Brooklyn Nets.

This will be Udoka’s first head coaching opportunity. He replaces Brad Stevens, who departed the bench after the Celtics were eliminated from the playoffs.

Stevens is the one hiring Udoka. He is now the President of Basketball Operations for the team.

The 43-year-old spent one season with the Nets as their assistant coach. He worked under Nets first-year head coach Steve Nash.

Before joining the Nets, he worked a season with the Philadelphia 76ers. He also worked seven seasons with the San Antonio Spurs.

The former NBA player takes over a team that is led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. He’ll also have to fix the culture problem that was going on with the team.

There have been reports that there was dysfunction with the team last year, especially with Stevens and Kemba Walker. Udoka is the seventh black head coach for the Celtics.

He is the first since Doc Rivers led the team from 2004 through 2013.

He is taking over a team that went 36-36 during the 2020-21 NBA season. The Celtics were defeated 4-1 by Udoka’s Nets team in the first round of the season.
