Martin Truex Sr., the father of the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion, Martin Truex Jr., has passed away. He was 66.
An official cause of death has not been announced yet.
“We are devastated by the loss of our father (Martin Truex Sr.),” the family said in a statement via Joe Gibbs Racing. “Simply put, he was our hero and a great man. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers and ask for privacy at this time.”

Martin Truex, who was born in Mayetta, New Jersey, competed in the series now known as the NASCAR Xfinity Series from 1989 through 1998. He made 15 starts.
He made three straights in 1989, 1994, and 1995. Truex completed 2,178 laps.
Truex completed a career-high 458 laps during the 1989 season in the three races.
He also competed in the series now known as the ARCA Menards Series East from 1989 through 2000. He competed in 135 races in that series, including one win in 1994.
He also led 327 laps of the 17,556 laps. Truex also had 10 Top 5 finished and 42 Top 10 finishes.
Truex also completed seven races in the series now known as the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour from 1985 through 1988. He completed one race each in 1985 and 1986.

Then, he completed two races in 1987 and then three races in 1988.
This news comes just one day after Truex Jr. announced that he would attempt to make the 2025 Daytona 500. He will be sponsored by Bass Pro Shops.
Truex was the father of Truex Jr. and current NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Ryan Truex. Truex retired so that Truex Jr. could continue his career.
