The Penn State Nittany Lions are once again without a head football coach. Former Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien has officially agreed to a contract to become the Houston Texans head coach.

The agreement is reportedly for two years. The financial terms of the agreement were not known at the time of this post.

It was reported last week that O’Brien and the Houston Texans met at his Cape Cod home, and they were working on a contract. O’Brien replaces Gary Kubiak, who was fired on December 6th, and interim head coach Wade Phillips.

O’Brien said that he was going to be at the school for the long haul. But apparently, the long haul only meant two years to him.

He came to the school after legendary Joe Paterno died in 2011 and didn’t step down when the school was facing sanctions under the Jerry Sandusky saga. He saw several players leave the school after the NCAA ruling that banned the Nittany Lions from a bowl game for four years, plus other penalties.

The Nittany Lions still have two more years that they cannot appear in a bowl game. This is something that their new head coach will have to deal with.

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano is reportedly the favorite for the job. The former Rutgers Scarlet Knights head coach lasted just two years in the NFL before being fired on Monday after an 11-21 record.

O’Brien is returning to the NFL with this move. He was the New England Patriots offensive assistant coach for five years under head coach Bill Belicheck.

In those five years, the Patriots averaged 30.7 points per game, which was an NFL-best. The Texans also have to pay Penn State $6.48 million dollars now that O’Brien is their new head coach.

This is O’Brien’s first NFL coaching job after Penn State was his first college coaching job. From 1993 through 2006, he was an assistant coach in the college ranks.

He coached at Brown, Georgia Tech, Maryland, and Duke during this time.
