Georgia State Panthers football head coach Shawn Elliott has resigned. According to FootballScoop, he is likely on his way back to the University of South Carolina.
At the time of this writing, South Carolina has not confirmed his hire. The Gamecocks, according to their website, have a need for a tight ends coach.
It is quite possible that Elliott will fill that role.
South Carolina has not announced a coaching hire since January 29th when they hired Joe DeCamillis as their associate head coach/special teams coordinator. He replaced Pete Lembo, who departed the program to become the Buffalo Bills head coach.
Elliott is the second head coach in the past week to leave a school to take a lesser role with another program. Former UCLA Bruins head coach Chip Kelly resigned from his position to accept the Ohio State Buckeyes offensive coordinator job.
The Bruins hired former running back Deshaun Foster to lead the team moving forward.
Former Boston College Eagles head coach Jeff Hafley resigned from his position. He accepted the defensive coordinator job with the Green Bay Packers.
Hafley, according to reports, left the college ranks due to concerns about the transfer portal and the NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness). Schools are reportedly paying players millions of dollars to sign with their program.
Elliott previously worked at South Carolina before accepting the Georgia State job. He worked there from 2010 through 2016.
He led the Panthers from 2017 through 2023. He was 41-44 (42-49 including South Carolina) as their head coach. But went 4-1 in Bowl games.
However, if Elliott is hired as their tight ends coach, which should coming in the coming days, it’ll be his first time coaching the tight ends position since 2000 when he was the Appalachian State Mountaineers tight ends coach.
He was the offensive line coach with the Gamecocks from 2010 through 2016. He also served as their co-offensive coordinator from 2012 through 2015.
He also served as their interim head coach in 2015.
