Ichiro becomes first Japanese player in the Baseball Hall of Fame

Japanese baseball player Ichiro Suzuki has been named to the Baseball Hall of Fame. He will be inducted into the Hall in Cooperstown, New York this summer.

Ichiro is the first Japanese player to be inducted into the Hall.

He received 99.7% of the vote on Tuesday. He was one vote shy of being the first position player to receive a unanimous vote, according to MLB.com.

The 51-year-old gets the call to the hall as his age number matches the jersey number (51) that he wore throughout his career. He spent 19 years in Major League Baseball after previously playing professionally in Japan.

Ichiro spent the bulk of his career with the Mariners. He played 14 years there.

He made his MLB debut with the Mariners during the 2001 season. He played for the team for the first time from 2001 through part of the 2012 season.

Later, he returned to the Mariners in his 40s, where he played two additional seasons on a limited basis. He played 15 games in 2018 then two games in 2019.

Ichiro retired after playing in the first two games of the 2019 season in the Japan Series.

He also played for the New York Yankees and the Miami Marlins in his career. His career spanned from 2001 through 2019.

Ichiro played 2,653 games. In his 14 years with the Mariners, he played in 1,861 games.

The Japanese icon had a career batting average of .311. He also had 117 home runs and 780 RBIs.

He also had 509 stolen bases. Ichiro had struck out 1,080 times and walked 647 times.
