According to TMZ Sports, Boston Celtics guard Jabari Bird was arrested. TMZ did not say exactly when he was arrested.
Bird, though, was involved in a domestic violence incident, according to the authorities. He allegedly assaulted, strangled, and kidnapped someone.
He also is undergoing a psych evaluation at a Boston, Mass. area hospital. The authorities also say he’s being “guarded” at the hospital.
The victim, according to TMZ, is being treated at another hospital.
“We are aware of the incident involving Jabari Bird and are taking it very seriously,” the Celtics said in a statement. “We are actively gathering information and will reserve further comment at this time.”
He will reportedly appear in court on Monday. That’s when he’ll be officially charged.
Bird, the 56th overall pick in the second round of the 2017 NBA Draft, made his NBA debut on October 20th, 2017. He’s 24-years-old and attended the University of California before being drafted.
He appeared in 13 games last season, including one start. He averaged 3.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.2 steals, and 0.1 blocks per game.
Bird also played 20 games, all starts, with the Maine Red Claws. He averaged 19.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.5 blocks per start.
The seriousness of the matter may cause the Celtics to cut ties with the second-round draft pick. Right now, the franchise has not made that decision and they said they will wait to make any further comments until the facts are presented on Monday.
