Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will miss the rest of the 2019 season. He had an MRI that revealed he needs to have surgery.
Roethlisberger will have the operation later this week, according to Steelers.com. He will be played on the Injured List and is not designated to return.
It was a non-contact injury when he got injured. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting it is like a Tommy John injury.

In addition, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said on SportsCenter it is ‘very serious.’ The 37-year-old Lima, Ohio native only played one full game and part of another before he was lost for the season.
He went 8 of 15 for 75 yards in a 28-26 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He has considered retirement in recent years — and this may cause him to officially step away once the season is complete.
For the first time in his long career, he did not play more than 12 games for the Steelers. One season ago, he appeared in 16 games, including 16 starts.
He had a career season with 452 of 675 for 5,129 yards and 34 touchdowns. This was his only season in his entire career that began in 2004 that he had 5,000-plus passing yards.
It is also his third season (32 in 2007 and 32 in 2014) that he had more than 30 passing touchdowns.
He signed a two-year, $68 million extension with the Steelers on April 24, 2019. The extension, according to Spotrac.com, will kick in for the 2020 season.
If he retires following this season, the Steelers will suffer with a $25 million dead cap hit. They’re already facing a $21 million dead cap hit this season from Antonio Brown.
They’ll also have to deal with a $12.5 million dead cap hit in 2021 if he retires.
