The Virginia Cavaliers have announced that Ron Sanchez will serve as their interim head coach. He will lead the team for the 2024-25 season.

Following that, the Cavaliers will do a national search for a new bench boss. Tony Bennett announced his sudden decision to retire on Friday.

“I’m excited,” Bennett said. “I’m excited for these players. They’ll have to grow together. They have a very tough schedule coming up, but they have a chance to be good. The staff, with Coach Sanchez leading it and the rest of the staff, have a chance to take this group and do the job. They’re more equipped than I am, and that’s the reality of this situation.”

Bennett said that he would like for Sanchez to get the job. However, ultimately, that will come down to the search committee.

The coaching ties between Bennett and Sanchez run deep. The duo were previously together with the Washington State Cougars.

First, he joined the Cougars staff under Bennett’s father, Dick Bennett’s staff, as their director of basketball operations. He then became an assistant coach under the younger Bennett when Bennett replaced his father in 2006.

Sanchez and Bennett worked together at Washington State from 2003 through 2009. Then, again at Virginia from 2009 through 2018.

Sanchez departed in 2018 to become the Charlotte 49ers head coach. He had a 72-78 record with the 49ers in five seasons.

In his final season in 2022-23, he guided the 49ers to a 22-14 record and a 2023 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) Championship.

In June 2023, he rejoined Bennett’s staff as the Cavaliers associate head coach.

“I believe he is equipped to do the job, but as he said to all of you, he has to have his whole heart in it,” Cavaliers athletic director Carla Williams said. “He is the embodiment of humility because he could keep doing this and not have his heart in it, but it takes more courage to say, ‘I’m not the person for it.’”
