The first expanded College Football Playoff Top 25 was released on Tuesday night. This featured primarily the Top 12 teams.

The Top 12 teams at the end of the College Football season will advance to the extended College Football Playoff. Previously, the College Football Playoff featured just four teams.

The undefeated Oregon Ducks are the top-ranked team at 9-0. The Ohio State Buckeyes, who escaped with a close win over the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday, are second with their 7-1 record.

The Georgia Bulldogs are third with their 7-1 record. The Miami (Florida) Hurricanes are next at No. 4 with their undefeated 9-0 record.

“They both had great wins in terms of on the road, Ohio State against Penn State this week, Georgia at Texas,” College Football Playoff Selection Committee Chairman Warde Manuel said on why Ohio State is above Georgia. “But what we felt is in terms of the losses they had, Ohio State lost to number 1, Oregon by 1, and Georgia lost at Alabama, who’s ranked number 11. So, that was really the difference.

“We’re splitting hairs in terms of looking at two great teams.”

The Texas Longhorns are fifth with their 7-1 record. Their lone loss came to the Bulldogs.

The Nittany Lions are sixth with their 7-1 record. The Tennessee Volunteers are seventh with a 7-1 record.

The undefeated Indiana Hoosiers are eighth with their 9-0 mark. The BYU Cougars are ninth with their 8-0 record.

“Two great teams,” Manuel said of Indiana and BYU. “I mean, Indiana, their strength of schedule is not as strong as BYU’s. But what Indiana has done on the field, when we look at those games, they’re winning by double digits, averaging 33 points a game more than their opponents.

“They’re solid on both sides, offensively and defensively. They’re just a really, really great team, and so is BYU. And so, as we contemplated, as we discussed, as we looked at everything, Indiana was ranked number 8 by the committee, and BYU was right behind them at 9.”

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are tenth with their 7-1 record. The Alabama Crimson Tide are 11th with their 6-2 record.

Rounding out the Top 12 is the Boise State Broncos, who are 7-1.

The SMU Mustangs are the first team out with their 8-1 record. The second team out is the Texas A&M Aggies, who are 7-2.
