The Philadelphia Union parted ways with head coach Jim Curtin. The team has begun a search for a new head coach.
Curtin had been with the team for more than a decade. The Pennsylvania native said after the final game of the season that he expected to be back next season.
Now, the Union will have a new leader for the 2025 season. Curtin’s final season was marred by injuries and they did not perform well at home despite several wins.
“Jim has been a remarkable leader and an integral part of our team’s success during his tenure,” Union Principal Owner Jay Sugarman said. “I have had the privilege to watch him grow into one of the top coaches in the league and deliver strong results and memorable moments that will be ingrained in our club’s history. This has been a difficult decision due in part to the immense gratitude and respect we have for him. We have no doubt he’ll find great success in his future coaching endeavors.”
Curtin took over the Union on June 10th, 2014. His tenure concluded on November 7th, 2024.
As the Union head coach, Curtin guided the team to a 176-111-133 record. He had a 41.9% win percentage.
In 2022, he guided the Union to their first MLS Cup, before ultimately losing to the LAFC.
“We want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Jim for his passion and dedication to this club over the last ten seasons. He greatly contributed to the success the club has achieved in recent years and for that we are extremely grateful,” Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner said. “We thank Jim for the significant impact he made both on the field and in the community. Following the 2024 season, we recognize the need for change. We’ll continue to evaluate our sporting strategy and make necessary changes this offseason to best set the team up for success.”
This past season, the Union went 9-15-10. The Union will have their first head coach since John Hackworth led the team in 2024 before being fired with a 3-7-6 record and replaced by Curtin.
