The Chicago Bears have fired head coach Matt Eberflus on Friday. He had been with the Bears as their head coach for part of the last three seasons.

The Bears made the move to fire Eberflus after a disastrous final drive on Thanksgiving against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. This is the Bears first in-season coaching change in team history.

As the Bears were driving late in the game against the Lions, the team had bad clock management. Following a sack by Lions pass rusher Za’Darius Smith, the clock was running with 33 seconds and one timeout.

The Bears were facing a 3rd and 26 play. Chicago could have had at least two plays with that amount of time to get the 26-yards.

However, Eberflus and rookie quarterback Caleb Williams let the clock go. Williams snapped the ball with six seconds before throwing an incomplete pass.

Bears wide receiver D.J. Moore said he wasn’t sure what the team was doing at that point in the game in a post-game interview. Yet, Eberflus said that he liked what his team did there.

Yes, he actually said that and it was caught on video.

Maybe he just wanted to be fired and had enough with the Bears. Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel shared on X that Williams changed the play call with 13 seconds.

Maybe he did. Maybe he didn’t. Maybe he was trying to escape the questioning from the media following the botched performance.

The Bears have the worst record in the NFC North with a 4-8 mark. The team has dropped its last six games.

Now, the team will have new leadership for the final few weeks of the season.

As an NFL head coach, Eberflus has fond 14-32 with the Bears.
