The Las Vegas Raiders hired veteran head coach Pete Carroll as their new head coach on Friday. He has agreed to a three-year contract with the team.
This deal also includes a fourth-year option. The 73-year-old Carroll was the first hire as a head coach by new GM John Spytek.
This bucks a trend that has seen NFL teams hire younger coaches this coaching cycle. Mike Vrabel was the only other older head coach when he was hired by the New England Patriots.
Carroll sat out the 2024 season. He parted ways with the Seattle Seahawks at the conclusion of the 2023 season.
Vrabel is 49 years old. The New York Jets hired Aaron Glenn, who is 52 years old.
The other head coaches hired in this cycle have been young in Ben Johnson and Liam Coen.
Carroll will be the oldest head coach when he coaches a game with the Raiders in September. He surpasses the record that Romeo Crennel had in 2020 when he took over for former Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien.
Crennel was 73 years, 199 days old when he coached his final game with Texans.
The Raiders were 4-13 this past season under former head coach Antonio Pierce, who was fired at the end of the season. The team will have one of the top picks in the upcoming draft.
As a head coach, Carroll is 170-120-1. In his 14 years with the Seahawks, he went 139-89-1. Carroll also guided the team to a Super Bowl during his tenure.
At the conclusion of the 2013 season, the Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl. They won the first cold weather Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Carroll had just three losing seasons during his Seahawks tenure. He went 7-9 in back to back years in 2010 and 2011.
He also guided the Raiders to a 7-10 mark in 2021.
The Raiders have not been to the playoffs since the 2021 season. They went 10-7 that season before losing in the Wild Card round.
Las Vegas also went 8-9 in 2023 before the disastrous season in 2024
