Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald said one of the priorities this offseason was to re-sign quarterback Geno Smith. Now, Smith is no longer with the team.

Smith was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday. The team will become official once the new league year starts on March 12th.

With this move, Smith is reunited with his former head coach Pete Carroll. Smith played for Carroll when he was the Seahawks’ head coach.

Smith is entering the final year of a three-year, $75 million deal in 2025. Now, with this trade, he’ll be the Raiders’ starting quarterback.

This comes after former starter Gardner Minshew was informed that he would be released.

The Seahawks will turn their attention to free-agent quarterback Sam Darnold, who had one of the best seasons of his career with the Minnesota Vikings this past season. He had previously signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Vikings for the 2024 season.

Carroll returned to coaching in January as the Raiders head coach. He is the oldest coach in the NFL.

He did not coach during the 2024 season after being the Seahawks’ longtime head coach from 2010 through 2023.

Smith spent five seasons with the Seahawks. However, it wasn’t until the last three seasons, when he had a resurgence in his career following the departure of Russell Wilson once he was moved to the Denver Broncos.

In 2022, Smith guided the Seahawks to a 9-8 record in his 17 starts.

He was 28-24 as a starter with the Seahawks, primarily in the past three seasons. Smith went 1,198 of 1,749 for 12,961 passing yards. He also had 76 touchdown passes and 36 interceptions.

This past season under Macdonald and former offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, Smith went 407 of 578 for 4,320 yards. He had 21 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions.

The 4,370 passing yards were a career high.

In his 11-year NFL career, Smith has gone 40-43 as a starter in 83 games. He made 94 appearances in the league.

He has gone 1,721 of 2,655 for 19,143 passing yards. He has thrown 105 touchdown passes and had 72 interceptions.
