“From the time I first dreamed of wearing the Yankees uniform, my goal has always been to help bring a World Series championship to New York,” Cole said in an Instagram post. “That dream hasn’t changed — I still believe in it, and I’m more determined than ever to achieve it. Today, the most respected medical experts in the field recommend that I undergo Tommy John surgery. This isn’t the news any athlete wants to hear, but it’s the necessary next step for my career.

“I have a lot left to give, and I’m fully committed to the work ahead. I’ll attack my rehab every day and support the 2025 Yankees each step of the way. I love this game, I love competing, and I can’t wait to be back on the mound — stronger than ever.”

With Cole sidelined due to an injury, Max Fried will be the ace of the rotation. At least for this season.

Fries signed with the Yankees in December as a free agent. He came to the team from the Atlanta Braves.

According to FanGraphs, Carlos Rodón is projected to be the No. 2 starter. Marcus Stroman is projected to be the team’s third starter.

Clarke Schmidt and Will Warren will round out the starting rotation. Schmidt is projected to be the team’s fourth starter.

Warren is projected to be the team’s fifth starter.

The 34 year old is signed through the 2028 season with the team after agreeing to a nine-year, $324 million deal before the 2020 season. The Yankees hope that when Cole returns in 2026 that he will not have any ramifications and lingering effects from the operation.
