Sovereignty wins the 151st Kentucky Derby

Sovereignty has won the 151st Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve on Saturday. The horse won the $3.1 million purse at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

This is Sovereignty’s second win this year. The horse also won the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida, on March 1st.

“The half-mile post, he started to pick up his momentum, and I lost him a little bit between the half mile and the 3/8th mark,” trainer William Mott said. “He made up a lot of ground in a hurry. He’s a great horse. He comes from a great organization and I can’t say enough about the horse and the organization that started him out and did everything to make this happen.”

Owner and breeder Godolphin doubled up this weekend. They also won the Kentucky Oaks on Friday.

Jockey Junior Alvarado won his first Kentucky Derby. This was  Mott’s second Kentucky Derby win.

“I got to thank my Lord Jesus for giving me this Kentucky Derby win,” Alvarado said after the race. “It was Him and Sovereignty, who got me all the way to the wire and it meant the world to me. My family is here. I thought I had a great chance.

“Mr. Mott, I was so confident the whole week. I knew Mr. Mott could have done it. If I had to pick someone, it was Mr. Mott. We’ve been a team for a while. It’s more than even a dream come true to have it done with him. Because of all the people, who have been very helpful throughout my career, too.”

The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Famer won the Kentucky Derby in 2019 following a disqualification. Mott’s Country House win the race following a 23-minute delay.

Churchill Down officials ruled that Maximum Security—who crossed the finish line first—was disqualified due to interference. Maximum Security’s representatives appealed the decision but were denied.

Journalism — the betting favorite — finished second. Baeza — who was the second-best betting favorite — finished third.
