In this throwback story, we’ll look back on John Madden’s first game as the Oakland Raiders head coach. He guided the Raiders to a 21-17 win over the Houston Oilers at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland, California.
With the win, the Raiders improved to 1-0 on the season. The Oilers fell to 0-1.

Raiders quarterback Daryle Lamonica went 10 of 31 for 148 yards. He had one touchdown pass and three interceptions.
Charlie Smith had 18 carries for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Warren Wells also had three receptions for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Oilers quarterback Pete Beathard went 14 of 38 for 224 yards. He had one touchdown pass and two interceptions.
Hoyle Granger led the backs with 18 carries for 54 yards and a touchdown. Mac Haik had four receptions for 98 yards.
The Oilers outscored the Raiders 14-7 in the second half. Beathard hit Jerry LeVias for a 15-yard touchdown reception. Holye Granger scored on a one-yard rushing touchdown.
Oakland’s Lamonica hit Wells for a 64-yard touchdown reception.
The Raiders led 14-3 at halftime. Charlie Smith scored two rushing touchdowns.
Oilers kicker Roy Gerela made a 28-yard field goal.
