According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Chicago White Sox are expected to hire Will Venable as their new manager. This was a birthday gift for Venable, who turned 42 on Tuesday.
This will be Venable’s first managerial opportunity. He is taking over a mess.
While the White Sox had a horrible record, the team has some key players to build around. Owner Jerry Reinsdorf and the front office hope Venable will give the team new hope for a brighter tomorrow.
The White Sox suffered the most losses in MLB history last year. The team went 41-121 during the season.
Pedro Grifol went 29-89 before being fired. Grady Sizemore — who was considered for this position before being knocked out by the finalists — went 13-32.
The 121 losses beat out the 1962 New York Mets team, who had the record for many decades, with 120 losses.
Venable had been the Texas Rangers associate manager under Bruce Bochy. He was also a part of the Rangers World Series team in 2023 when the team defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Before joining the Rangers, Venable had been the Boston Red Sox bench coach in 2021 and 2022. He began his coaching career with the Chicago Cubs.
He spent 2018 and 2019 as the Cubs first base coach. Then, in 2020, he was named the Cubs’ third base coach.
Before getting into coaching, Venable was a player for the San Diego Padres from 2008 through 2015. He also played for the Rangers in 2015.
Then, his final season came with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016.
