“I’ve never been more motivated in my career to go out there and put my body in a position to where I can stay healthy for another 162 games, plus whatever the postseason brings,” Skubal said Wednesday on a conference call.

He won the pitcher’s version of the Triple Crown this past season. He was also the MLB’s wins leader.

Plus, he was the American League ERA leader. And the MLB strikeout leader.

He received 30 first-place votes. Because he was a unanimous winner, he did not need any votes in the four other categories.

“I’m proud of what I was able to accomplish last year,” Skubal said, “but I couldn’t be more excited looking forward, and getting back to Lakeland for spring training and setting up another successful season in Detroit. You never know what happens. I think that’s the beauty of the playoffs. Let’s just get in and see what happens.”

Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Seth Lugo was second. He received 93 total points.

Lugo received 14 second-place votes. He also received nine third-place votes.

In addition, he received three fourth-place votes. And he finally received four fifth-place votes to make up his 93 points.
