Iowa Hawkeyes Men’s Basketball head coach Fran McCaffrey has been fired. He led the program for the last 15 seasons.

His final game leading the Hawkeyes came on Thursday. The Illinois Fighting Illini won 106-94 over the Hawkeyes.

McCaffrey did not coach his team throughout the game. He was ejected after being issued a double technical. He exchanged words with the referees before and after the ejection then leaving the court side area.

He is the winningest coach in program history. McCaffrey guided the Hawkeyes to a 17-16 record this season.

A national search has begin to find his replacement.

As the head coach of the Hawkeyes, he recorded a total of 297 wins and 207 losses. His best season at the school was during the 2021-22 season when the team achieved a record of 26 wins and 10 losses. That year, the team won the conference tournament and earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Throughout his 15 seasons, McCaffrey led the Hawkeyes to six NCAA Tournament appearances, but the team did not advance past the second round in any of those tournaments.

Overall, McCaffrey has a head coaching record of 548 wins and 384 losses across four schools. Before his time with the Hawkeyes, he coached the UNC Greensboro Spartans, the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, and the Siena Saints.

Now at 65 years old, he may be considering his next career move. Given the current landscape of college athletics, particularly with the rise of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals, McCaffrey might opt for a broadcasting role, as many other coaches have done.
