The New York Rangers hired Mike Sullivan as their head coach. He comes to the Big Apple after being the Pittsburgh Penguins head coach before being fired.
At press time, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Mike Sullivan has established himself as one of the premier head coaches in the NHL,” Rangers GM Chris Drury said. “Given his numerous accomplishments throughout his coaching career — including two Stanley Cups and leading Team USA at the international level — Mike brings a championship-level presence behind the bench. I’ve gotten to know Mike very well over the years, including as teammates in the 1997 World Championships, when he coached me as a player in New York, and through our shared time working together with USA Hockey.
“As we began this process and Mike became an available option for us to speak with, it was immediately clear that he was the best coach to lead our team.”
With this move, Sullivan is joining the Rangers organization, who drafted him with the 69th overall pick in the 1987 NHL Draft. However, he decided to not sign and remain in college at the time.
Following a playing career with multiple teams, Sullivan began his coaching career. He led the Boston Bruins and the Penguins.
The 57-year-old Sullivan spent a decade coaching the Penguins. He also guided the team to two Stanley Cup Championships in 2016 and 2017.
Before being named the Penguins head coach in 2015, he also served as the head coach for the Bruins in 2003-04 and 2005-06.
Sullivan guided the Bruins to a 104-point season in 2003-04. However, the team dropped to a 74-point team in 2005-06.
During the 2024-05 season, the Rangers went 39-36-7. They had 85 points.
Following the season, the Rangers fired Peter Laviolette. Sullivan went 34-36-12 in his final season with the Penguins.
