Late in the race, Larson was told that he had to manage his tires and fuel. At the very end, the telecast said that Larson may have had problems with his tire.
The telecast showed a tire, which appeared to be near flat, as Larson was driving to Victory Lane.
“I was trying hard to pace myself because I believe that was our longest run of the day. I’d been struggling a little bit at the end of the runs,” Larson said. “Chase [Briscoe] was really good, so I just felt like I needed to try to be better on my end. I don’t know if it was paying off or not at the end. I was still struggling. I don’t know if the right front was starting to wear a lot or what, but I was starting to lose a lot of grip and then I was vibrating badly, so I was afraid a right rear or something would let go.
“But yeah, great car, great execution today, too, for our team. Thanks to Hendrickcars.com, Valvoline, Prime, and all you race fans, too, for coming out. This is awesome weather to get to watch a cool race. Glad to not win by an inch right here this time and a little bit safer gap. But thanks again to the team. Congrats to all Hendrick Motorsports, the engine shop, everybody there.”
This was Larson’s third career win at Kansas Speedway. He has won the Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway for the second consecutive year.
Larson is also the points leader, as well, following this race.
“I just think it’s cool. I think it’s good for our team. I think it’s good for our sport. I think it’s good for racing that the Cup Series point leader is competing in the Indy 500 for the second year in a row. I would say last year was a goal of mine. This year I didn’t think about it. But I do think it puts even more of a spotlight on us and our sport.
“I do think it’s cool, and yeah, we had a great day, so great points day. Yeah, I look forward to the next couple weeks and then actually getting to race the 600 and hopefully having the point lead after that one, too.”
Reser’s Fine Foods sponsored driver Christopher Bell finished second. According to the telecast, this is the fourth time that Larson and Bell finished 1-2 in a race.
Yet, Larson won three of the four races.
“I was surprised that he kind of gave up on the top those last couple laps and pulled down,” Bell said. “But I was struggling just as bad as he was, so I was just trying to get to the end. I know Ryan was coming on strong there. Overall, to get home second with a lot of stage points was something that we needed after the last couple of weeks, and this Reser’s Camry was just not quite what we needed.
“I don’t know, I feel like our day was kind of a product of qualifying well, having good pit stops, having good restarts and nothing took us out of it. Whenever the long green flag runs came, it seemed like we were going backward and there were a couple of guys that could drive by us. Yeah, to walk out of here second, I’m (pleased) with, and hopefully we can be a little bit stronger when we come back.”
Wurth-sponsored driver Ryan Blaney finished third. The Top 3 finishers were owned by three separate teams: Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, and Team Penske. They also were driven by three separate manufacturers: Chevrolet, Toyota, and Ford.
Outside of Larson’s dominant performance, Bell led three laps. Ally-sponsored driver Alex Bowman led two laps. Shell and Pennzoil sponsored driver Joey Logano led one lap.
