Wood Brothers driver Harrison Burton has picked up his first career NASCAR Cup Series win. He did it on Saturday night during the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida.
According to a social media post, this is also the 100th career win for the Wood Brothers.
“I cried the whole victory lap,” Burton said. “I obviously got fired from this job and wanted to do everything for the Wood Brothers I could, they’ve given me an amazing opportunity in life and to give them the 100th [win] on my way out is amazing. We’re in the playoffs now. Let’s go to Darlington and see what happens.”
The 23-year-old Burton drove the DEX Imaging entry to Victory Lane. This was also special for his father Jeff Burton, who is an NBC Sports broadcaster calling the event.
“That is what the sport is about,” Burton’s father, Jeff said after his son won.
Due to the win, Burton has gone from the absolute last position to making the NASCAR playoffs. He led just the final lap of the race.
Burton held off Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen-sponsored driver Kyle Busch in the race. Busch, the veteran driver, has struggled this season.
The second-place finish for Busch was his best of the season. He previously finished third in Atlanta in the incredible finish.
“Just frustrating, you know,” Busch said, who is looking for his first win on the season. “We win races here in Daytona going into the last restart but haven’t been able to pull off the victory, not sure what I’m doing wrong or missing. I wanted to get up in front of the 21 [Burton] because I knew the momentum was coming there but I knew the 20 [former teammate Christopher Bell] was a better friend [behind], just didn’t work out. As usual.”
Interstate Batteries sponsored driver Christopher Bell finished third.
Jacob Construction/Parts Plus sponsored driver Cody Ware had a career finish. He finished in the fourth position — his first Top 5 of his career.
REAGAN the movie-sponsored driver Ty Gibbs finished fifth.
Busch was the only Chevrolet manufacturer in the Top 5. Burton and Ware drove Fords, while Bell and Gibbs were in Toyotas.
