The Washington Commanders released defensive tackle Jonathan Allen on Friday. The team previously tried to trade him.
However, when their trade options did not pan out, the team decided to release him.

Allen had been with the Commanders franchise since the 2017 season. He was their first round draft pick (17th overall pick) in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Now a free agent, Allen and his representatives can begin to talk to other teams about his next employment. The new NFL league year begins at 11:59:59 on March 12th.
The Anniston, Alabama native appeared in eight games this past season. He made seven starts.
Allen had 19 tackles, including 3 tackles for a loss. He also had seven quarterback hits.
He had 3.0 sacks. The 3.0 sacks were the fewest since he had 2.0 sacks during the 2020 season.
In his eight year career, he appeared in 109 games. Allen made 108 starts.
Allen had 401 tackles in his Commanders career. He also had 60 tackles for a loss and 118 quarterback hits. He also made a tackle that resulted in a safety.
He has had 42.0 sacks in his career. Allen had a career-high 9.0 sacks during the 2021 season.
He also had one interception, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and five pass deflections.
