Union escapes in PKs in U.S. Open Cup win over Indy Eleven

Chester, Pa. — The Philadelphia Union has advanced to the next round in the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. The Union escaped in a penalty kick shootout to get the win at Subaru Park.
 
At the end of the regular time and an additional 30 minutes, the game was tied at 1-1. However, in penalty kicks, the Union prevailed 5-4 in the Round of 32.

The Union is now in the Round of 16. With the win, the Union may play again in this tournament on May 20th or 21st.

Their next game in the Open Cup may be played at Subaru Park before their mega matchup with Inter Miami CF on May 24th during Memorial Day weekend.
 
The Union has won their first U.S. Open Cup game since 2018. Young phenom Cavan Sullivan made his first start for the Union in this game.
 
Fellow homegrown player David Vasquez also made his first start for the team, as well.
 
According to the Union, this is the second penalty kick win for Union goaltender Andrew Rick in a matter of days. On Saturday, May 3rd, the Philadelphia Union II defeated Chattanooga 0-0 (9-8 in penalty kicks).
 
Indiana Vassilev, Tai Baribo, Frankie Westfield, Jeremy Rafanello, and Jovan Lukić made the Union penalty kicks. Lukić made the decisive penalty kick in the fifth round to help the Union prevail in this match-up.
 
Indy Eleven converted their first two penalty kicks. Romario Williams and Jack Blake made their penalty kicks. 
 
Union goalkeeper Rick stopped Aodhan Quinn in his third attempt. Following the stop in the third round of penalty kicks, Cam Lindley and Aedan Stanley made their penalty kicks. 
 
The Union got on the board first. Alejandro Bedoya scored in the sixth minute.

This was Bedoya’s 30th goal in all competitions with the Union. He is now the seventh player in club history to reach this mark.
 
Then, right after halftime, Elvis Amoh scored in the 48th minute.
