The Boston Red Sox signed free agent third baseman Alex Bregman late Wednesday night. Bregman agreed to a three-year, $120 million deal.
His contract calls for an average salary of $40 million per season. But depending on how it is worked, he may not get $40 million per season.

Bregman may get less in the first season than more in the final two seasons. At press time, it is not clear how his deal will be finalized in terms of the salary each season.

This was the Red Sox’s first transaction of the month. It was also their first move since the team signed infielder Abraham Toro to a minor league contract.
According to FanGraphs, Bregman is projected to bat second in their starting lineup. He is expected to bat behind left fielder Jarren Duran, who be the leadoff batter.
Following Bregman, third baseman Rafael Devers is projected to bat third with first baseman Triston Cases expected to bat fourth. Shortstop Trevor Story is projected to bat fifth.
Masataka Yoshida is projected to be the team’s designated hitter and bat sixth. Right fielder Wilyer Abreu is projected to bat seventh. Catcher Connor Wong is projected to bat eighth.
Center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela is projected to bat ninth.
Bregman was one of the last remaining free agents. He signed just days before spring training starts for the teams as they revamp things up for the new season.
He spent his first nine seasons with the Houston Astros. He has a career .272 batting average with 191 home runs and 663 RBIs in 1,111 games.
The Albuquerque, New Mexico native also has 1,132 hits in 4,157 at-bats.

Bregman had a .260 batting average in 2024. He also had 26 home runs and 75 RBIs in 145 games.
He also had 151 hits, 30 doubles, and three triples. He also had a .315 on-base percentage and a .453 slugging percentage.
