The San Diego Padres signed free agent Nick Pivetta on Wednesday night. He has agreed to a four-year deal, as he is now signed through the 2028 season.
Pivetta will now have an opt-out following the 2026 and 2027 seasons, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Reports suggest that Pivetta has a back-loaded deal.

He will have a $1 million base salary in 2025, according to Passan. He will also receive a $3 million signing bonus.

However, in 2026, he will receive $19 million. The following season, in 2027, he will receive $14 million. The final year of his deal in 2028 calls for an $18 million salary.
This was a nice early birthday gift, as he turns 32 on Friday. He was the fourth transaction by the Padres this month.
On February 7th, the team signed outfielder Jason Heyward to a one-year contract. Also, on that same day, the team signed first baseman/outfielder Connor Joe to a one-year deal.
Then, two days later on February 9th, the team signed first baseman/outfielder Gavin Sheets to a minor league contract.
FanGraphs projects that Pivetta will be the Padres’ fourth starting pitcher. They project that Dylan Cease will be the ace of the rotation.
Then, they are projecting that Michael King will be the second starting pitcher. Yu Darvish is projected to be the team’s third starting pitcher. After Pivetta, Randy Vásquez is projected to be the team’s fifth starting pitcher.
The Canadian spent 4-plus seasons with the Red Sox. He was traded to the Red Sox with Connor Seabold from the Philadelphia Phillies for Heath Hembree and Brandon Workman on August 21st, 2020.
This past season, he appeared in 27 games. He made 26 starts and went 6-12.

He had a 4.14 ERA in the 27 games. Pivetta pitched 145 1/3 innings, where he gave up 70 runs (67 earned runs) on 128 hits.
He gave up 28 home runs. Pivetta struck out 172 batters and walked 36.
